When I think about Japan and slowness, I think about the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto. Katsura is one of the most immaculate examples of preservation I've ever seen, and the exquisite 16-acre property—an apex of traditional Japanese architecture and garden design—still feels so contemporary. This sense of timelessness; the incredible shakkei framing, or borrowed scenery; and the rich, wabi-sabi layering is something I wanted to try to evoke through this playlist.
