By our longtime friend Spencer Bailey, co-founder of the media company The Slowdown, co-host of the Time Sensitive and At a Distance podcasts, and editor-at-large of Phaidon:
When I think about Japan and slowness, I think about the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto. Katsura is one of the most immaculate examples of preservation I've ever seen, and the exquisite 16-acre property—an apex of traditional Japanese architecture and garden design—still feels so contemporary. This sense of timelessness; the incredible shakkei framing, or borrowed scenery; and the rich, wabi-sabi layering is something I wanted to try to evoke through this playlist.
